AN ANALYSIS OF TRANSLATION PROCEDURES IN THE SUBTITLES OF NETFLIX’S WORLD WAR II: FROM THE FRONTLINES

This study focus is analysing the translation procedures in the subtitles of World War II: From the Frontlines on Netflix using the content analysis method since the main subject of this paper is audiovisual media as the main source of data to systematically identify, categorize, and interpret the translation procedures. Data were gathered through World War II: From the Frontlines, a six-part documentary series released back in 2023 by Netflix, directed by Rob Coldstream and narrated by John Boyega.
This research took one episode titled The Master Race and employed content analysis technique and used a systematic sampling, a probability sampling method that selects data at regular, predetermined intervals. In this study, the intervals were determined using even numbers, so the researcher only selects data that fall on even-numbered positions.
The results show that the translation procedures used in this study is 235. They are transference 18 data (7,7%), naturalization 31 data (13,2%), calque 13 data (5,5%), cultural equivalent 9 data (3,8%), transposition 41 data (17,4%), modulation 47 data (20,0%), paraphrase 21 data (8,9%), omission 30 data (12,8%), explication 23 data (9,8%), and addition 2 data (0,9%). Moreover, the most dominant translation procedure used is modulation. Modulation is the dominant procedure because it effectively bridges the linguistic, cultural, and emotional gap, ensuring that target audiences receive the same narrative clarity and intended meaning as the original. By recasting such expressions into more intuitive conceptual frames, modulation closes this gap and creates translations that feel natural while staying true to the original material's intent.
