AN ANALYSIS OF STATIVE VERBS FOUND IN ANALYTICAL EXPOSITION TEXTS IN THE ENGLISH TEXTBOOK “PR BUKU INTERAKTIF BAHASA INGGRIS” SMA/MA/SMK/MAK FOR GRADE X

This study aims to identify and analyze the types of stative verbs found in the analytical exposition and dialogue texts of the English textbook PR Buku Interaktif Bahasa Inggris for Grade X SMA/MA/SMK/MAK. Based on Belli’s (2018) classification, the study focuses on four categories: perception and sensation, cognition, having and being, and stance. It also examines how these verb types express situations, mental processes, characteristics, and evaluative meanings in English.
This research employed a descriptive qualitative design. The data were collected from 12 analytical exposition and dialogue texts in the textbook. The procedures involved identifying, classifying, and analyzing stative verbs based on Belli’s (2018) theoretical framework. The analysis described the occurrence and functions of each stative verb type to provide a systematic understanding of their use in the selected texts.
The researcher found 158 stative verb data points across 12 analytical exposition and dialogue texts within the PR Buku Interaktif Bahasa Inggris for Grade X. The distribution consisted of 56 perception and sensation verbs, 46 cognition verbs, 44 having and being verbs, and 12 stance verbs. Perception and sensation were the most dominant category because the texts emphasize sensory descriptions, physical observations, and emotional responses, while stance was the least frequent. These findings indicate that the textbook is an appropriate resource for learning stative verbs, can help students understand how they express situations and evaluative meanings, thereby improving reading comprehension.
