Abstract

This study investigated the correlation between self-efficacy and speaking ability among undergraduate students of English Language Education at the University of Palangka Raya. The participants of this study consisted of 135 students. The data were collected through self-efficacy questionnaire and speaking assessments conducted during students’ speaking activities in class.
This study employed a quantitative research design. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, normality tests, scatterplot analysis, and Pearson correlation analysis. Follow-up interviews were also conducted to explore the possible reasons behind the statistical findings.
The findings showed that there was no significant correlation between self-efficacy and speaking ability. The Pearson correlation result showed a correlation coefficient of 0.134 with a significance value of 0.422, indicating a very weak and statistically insignificant relationship between the two variables. The interviews revealed that speaking ability was influenced by several factors, such as vocabulary mastery, pronunciation, anxiety, speaking practice, and classroom environment.
In conclusion, self-efficacy alone could not fully explain students’ speaking ability. Speaking performance was influenced by various English-Speaking Ability (Vocabulary and Accuracy (Grammar)), psychological, and environmental factors.
