Abstract
The use of digital tools in education has become increasingly important, especially for pre-service teachers in designing effective learning materials. Canva is one of the platforms that supports creativity and eases the development of instructional media. Therefore, this study aims to investigate pre-service teachers’ perceptions of using Canva in designing learning materials during their PLP II teaching practice.
This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach involving seven preservice teachers of the English Language Education Study Program who conducted their teaching practice at SMP Negeri 9 Palangka Raya in the academic year 2025/2026. The data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, and documentation. The instruments were adapted from Susanto and Udayanie (2025) and categorized into usefulness, ease of use, and accessibility.
The results of the study based on the questionnaire show that most preservice teachers have positive perceptions of Canva in terms of usefulness, ease of use, and accessibility. The usefulness aspect obtained a mean score of 80.95%, categorized as very high, while ease of use obtained a mean score of 83.57%, also categorized as very high. Meanwhile, accessibility obtained a mean score of 85.71%, categorized as very high. These findings are supported by the interview results, which reveal that participants perceive Canva as helpful in simplifying the design process through ready-to-use templates and creating more engaging materials. They also find Canva easy to use due to its user-friendly features and drag-and-drop functions, which do not require advanced technical skills. In addition, Canva is considered highly accessible as it can be used anytime and across various devices, supported by its cloud-based system that allows users to save and edit their work seamlessly. However, some limitations were identified, including the availability of other tools that may be more effective for certain materials, the potential limitation of creativity through ready-to-use templates, and Canva's dependence on a stable internet connection. To sum up, Canva is perceived as a useful, easy-to-use, and accessible digital tool, although its use should be adjusted to users' needs and classroom conditions.
