Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out whether using YouTube videosof "Asking and Giving Opinions or Thoughts" has a significant effect on students'speaking skills.A pre-experimental design employing a one-group pretest – post-test groupdesign was utilized as the research method. The population of this study wereeleventh-grade students from MAN Kota Palangka Raya. XI MIPA 1 was chosenas the experimental group using cluster random sampling, while XI MIPA 2 waschosen as the tryout group. Speaking skills were evaluated with a pretest and post-test. Data analysis was conducted using the Wilcoxon non-parametric test due tothe non-normal distribution of the data. Additionally, a questionnaire was utilizedas secondary data to supplement the statistical findings in this research.Based on the results of the Wilcoxon non-parametric test, if the Asymp. Sig.(2-tailed) value is less than sig. 0,05 (Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) < 0,05), then thealternative hypothesis (Ha) can be accepted while rejecting the null hypothesis(Ho). In this case, the Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) value was found to be 0,001.Comparing this value to the probability value of 0,05, it means that 0,001 < 0,05,indicating that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the null hypothesis(Ho) is rejected. It was also supported by the results of the questionnaire, whichshowed that the students' responses fell into the "agree" category for 4 questionsand the "strongly agree" category for 6 other questions after being analyzed byusing the % index formula and the percentage of questionnaire scores in Table 4.5.It can be concluded that YouTube videos of “asking for and giving opinions andthoughts” have a significant effect on students’ speaking skills in the eleventh gradeat MAN Kota Palangka Raya in the academic year 2022-2023.
