Abstract

Code Mixing is a phenomenon of mixing language that often happens in the society these days including in Fairventures Worldwide. This study is conducted to examine the types and reasons of code mixing used by the employees of Fairventures Worldwide Indonesia.
This study utilized a descriptive qualitative research method to examine Code Mixing. The data were sourced from 148 utterances provided by 32 participants in the Finance and HR Workshop conducted by Fairventures Worldwide. Data collection involved recording and transcribing these utterances during the workshop sessions. The data were subjected to a reduction process to focus on relevant instances of Code Mixing. Subsequently, an analysis was conducted to classify and analyze the occurrences, identifying patterns and themes related to the use of Code Mixing in the workshop.
The results of the research revealed 3 types of Code Mixing. Among these, Insertion was the most frequently used type, with a total of 31 utterances. The study also identified 7 different reasons for Code Mixing among participants, with the most prevalent reason talking about a particular topic, which was observed in 55 utterances. Additionally, the research uncovered a new reason for Code Mixing, the 'habitual factor,' which had not been previously documented.
These findings have significant implications for the field of English as a Foreign Language (EFL). The research may provide valuable insights into the sociolinguistic dynamics of Code Mixing, which can enhance the understanding of language use in professional settings. For EFL students and employees at Fairventures Worldwide, the research underscores the importance of contextual factors in language use and offers practical implications for improving communication strategies within multilingual environments.
