TikTok is one of the most popular and viral social media applications among teenagers, including students. Its popularity is not only for entertainment purposes, but it has also begun to be used in education as an engaging learning medium. This phenomenon led the researcher to investigate how the use of interactive TikTok videos can influence students' vocabulary mastery in learning English.
This research was conducted at SMP Kristen Palangka Raya using eighth-grade students as the research subjects. The sample consisted of 12 eighth-grade students selected using a total sampling technique. This study employed a pre-experimental design with a one-group pre-test and post-test model. To collect the data, the researcher used a test as the research instrument. Students answered vocabulary questions during the pre-test stage before receiving the treatment. After the pre-test, the researcher provided treatment using interactive TikTok videos. Finally, a post-test was administered to assess the students’ vocabulary mastery after the treatment. The data obtained were then analyzed using SPSS version 25.
The results of data analysis showed that the pre-test and post-test scores were normally distributed based on the Shapiro-Wilk test, thus the researcher used a parametric test for hypothesis testing. The calculation results indicated that the Sig. (2-tailed) value was greater than 0.05, which means that the null hypothesis (Ho) was accepted and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was rejected. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the use of interactive TikTok videos did not have a significant effect on the vocabulary mastery of eighth-grade students at SMP Kristen Palangka Raya. This indicates that the media was not yet effective in improving students’ vocabulary mastery.
